Town Ramparts

The first ramparts were built in about 1290. They were about 1.2 to 1.5 m thick and 6 - 8 m high of quarry stone. They suppose the ramparts consisted of approximatelly 20 bastions and 5 - 6 gates. Their total length was about 2260 m. Some parts of the "Lower gate" (situated on the south) have been preserved.
In the 14th century the ramparts did not satisfy the needs of the town anymore and thus in 15th century the construction of the new ramparts was started in front of the main moat, the so-called "parkanovy mur". The new ramparts were significantly better designed and built of quarry stone as well. They were 5m high and about 0,8 - 1,0 m thick. the lenght of the ramparts was about 2355 m.
In the course of time these ramparts also became unsatisfactory, so a completely new fortification was built again 40 - 50 m far from the original ramparts. There were artillery rondels - huge stone buildings with cannon chambers. The fortification was gradually abolished in the course of the development of the town.

At present, remnants of the rampart walls have been preserved in the streets: Čajkovského, Hrnčiarska, Podtatranského, Kováčska, Stará baštová, Štefániková, Gottwaldovej, Zbrojničná, Baštová, Hradbová, Tajovského a Vrátna. Parts of them have been used for fences of the yards, gardens or bricked in the later constructed houses.
Well preserved monuments of the medieval fortification are the bastions.
