The Royal House

The building was built by modification of burgher's houses to meet the needs of the Kosice University founded in 1657. The building was subjected to numerous reconstructions.
In his Golden Bull King Leopold I raised the Kosice University with the theological, philosophical and linguistic faculties to the rank of other well-known European universities. In 1776 the Kosice university became a branch of the Buda university and changed its name to Royal Academy. In the years 1671 - 1681 the academic university church was attached to the building as well as the building on Kovacska Street (which stood there until about 140 years ago and has not been preserved) to serve as the university print-house.
The facade of the building is dated from the 19th century. The entrance portal is decorated with pilasters. Rooms are shaped with cross fan vaulting. On the building a memorial plaque dedicated to the slovak writer Jonas Zaborsky can be found.
