Hospital Church church of the Holy Spirit

The word hospital (hospitale) used to be a designation of a charity organization for the very old, the poor, orphans, the homeless and sick. The hospital was situated outside the town walls and the church was a part of it from the very beginning. Unfortunately, it always stood in the way of armies and was repeatedly demolished yet reconstructed on the same place. The present church was built in 1731. The parson was obliged to provide the spiritual consolation in all the suburbs after the gates were closed. The church is situated in the axis of former hospital buildings.
The main altar piece shows Descent of the Holy Spirit. The capacity of the interior is small, it is only for 200 people. The vault painting is highly interesting. It shows a view of Košice in the first third of 18th century, when the town was surrounded by high town walls. The whole church emanates the atmosphere of bygone days and the interior that of intimacy.
At present, the House for pensioners is placed in the building.
