Greek-Catholics started to settle or were settled here by their monarchs only in 17th century. At the beginning, worshippers of Kosice belonged under the parish in Zdoba, only in 1852 their bishop established a chapel in Kosice. Divine services were served in the Seminary Church, in the side chapel, rarely at Premonstrates or in the Saint Michael's chapel. About 1880, the community disposed with substantial savings and they were able to buy lots neighboring with the chapel resulting in the construction of the church in Neo-Romanesque style in the years 1882- 1886. In the interior, the sanctuary is separated from the nave by a typical orthodox element - iconostas. The icons are positioned by a strict rule. The lower four, bigger ones in the floor of the nave have the following unchangeable sequence: from the left - Saint Nicholas, God's Mother, Jesus and the last icon is always the icon portraiting the patron of the church, in this case the Birth of Virgin Mary. |
| The main altar in the sanctuary also shows this event. The Czar's door of the iconostas is decorated with paintings of four Evangelists. Above them, there is the prescribed icon depicting the Last Supper with twelve apostles on both sides. Also prophets may be in the iconostas gable, nevertheless in the centre there must be the cross. The painting of the God's Heart was painted by E. Halasz - Hradil, a co-founder of the first private school of painting in Kosice, the side altar of the Holy Family was painted by Mikulas Jordan from Presov. In the Totalitarian era, the church was given to the Orthodox as the only officially supported church. After being returned to the original owners, the church was restored and repaired. |
